In Californië zijn vannacht de MTV Video Music Awards uitgereikt. Miley Cyrus won de belangrijkste award van de avond, haar single 'Wrecking Ball' werd bekroond met Video of the Year.

Miley Cyrus, die vorig jaar nog voor opschudding zorgde door haar expliciete optreden met Robin Thicke, liet een dakloze jongen de award ophalen. Hij vroeg de bezoekers stil te staan bij het aantal dakloze tieners in Los Angeles. Miley keek huilend vanuit het publiek toe.

De award voor Best Female Video werd uitgereikt aan Katy Perry met 'Dark Horse' en bij de mannen won Ed Sheeran met 'Sing' de award. 'Problem' van Ariana Grande & Iggy Azalea won in de categorie Best Pop Video en 'Royals' van Lorde won Best Rock Video.

Tijdens de awardshow waren er optredens van onder meer Ariana Grande, Jessie J, Nicki Minaj, Maroon 5, Sam Smith, Taylor Swift en 5 Seconds of Summer. Beyoncé (die ook een oeuvreprijs kreeg) trad het langst op en sloot de show af.
